What is facial volume loss?

Facial volume loss is usually noticeable in the form of thin lips and hollow/sunken cheeks or temples. It can often give off a grim appearance, making us look much older than we are. Around your 30s, you might notice your lips becoming thinner and not as full. You might also experience loose skin around the jawline, which gives off the appearance of a weak chin. Hollow cheeks will also appear to recede inward into the facial bones, instead of projecting outward.

What are the causes of facial volume loss?

As with most aesthetic concerns, the aging process often leads to the loss of facial volume. Collagen production starts to decline in our early 30’s. Not only do our bodies produce less collagen (which gives skin its elasticity and plumpness), but we also lose subcutaneous fat as we grow older. A sudden loss of weight, smoking, and other poor lifestyle choices can also accentuate volume loss.

Thin lips occur for the same reason that your skin begins to sag over time: lost collagen and hyaluronic acid (HA). Collagen and HA give our lips plumpness, moisture, and an overall look of youthfulness. Genetics will also determine your lip size and shape. If your lips are naturally small, there’s a good chance that your lips will begin to thin out in your late 20s.

How is volume loss treated?

If you would like to add or restore volume to your face, we recommend dermal fillers like the Juvéderm Family of Fillers, Radiesse as well as Revanesse Versa and Revanesse Lips. Most of these injectable treatments use hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally-occurring substance in the body and all of them have lidocaine to provide extra comfort. When injected into specific areas, fillers will replace lost facial volume and reshape the face for a more balanced look.

Dermal fillers are perfectly safe, and with an experienced medical provider administering them, know that you will receive the natural appearance you desire.
